Introduction
Connection to network resources in the RDC is only available from the RDC wired network. To allow remote access, including from other Physics buildings and Eduroam , we use a dedicated managed VPN. Previously, access to devices on the Physics network were available to any user with access to the University VPN. The new approach improves security by restricting the number of people who have access and allowing the list to be managed within the department. The managed VPN uses the same platform as the University VPN and can be set up in the same way.
To use the VPN, first request access via the https://cavendish.atlassian.net/servicedesk/customer/portal/1 and then follow the instructions below to configure it.

Start by accessing the VPN system settings. You can do this by typing “VPN” in the Windows Search box.
Give the connection a name E.g. “Hitachi VPN”. The server name is vpn-hitachi.phy.cam.ac.uk. Enter those details and click Save
Click on the arrow next to connect and then choose Advance options
Click on Edit next or More VPN properties, then choose the Security tab:
Change the Type of VPN to IKEv2 and change the Data encryption to Require encryption (disconnect if server declines)
Next, click on the Networking tab, select TCP/IPv4 click on Properties and verify that it’s set to Obtain an IP address automatically and obtain DNS server address automatically.
Then click on Advanced and verify that the setting Use default gateway on remote network is selected. Click on OK in all of the windows to return to the VPN settings and then click on VPN at the top of the window to return to the list of VPNs available:
Connecting to the VPN
You will need a UIS token to connect. Go to https://tokens.uis.cam.ac.uk and follow the process to create a new token: Create and manage network access tokens | IT Help and Support
The first time you connect, you will be asked for your user name and password. This is the username and password for the token you have just created (NB: not your normal University Account CRSID and password).
MacOS
Open System Preferences (Settings)
Open the VPN settings and Add VPN Configuration > IKEv2
Enter the details (Replacing Physics for Hitachi and server for : vpn-hitachi.phy.cam.ac.uk )
Note the server address and the Remote ID are the same. You should then be able to turn the VPN on and connect

Download the Windows App, this can be done from App Store, or if you are on a managed Mac, it can be made available in the Jamf Self Service app - Log a ticket with the IT Team
Ensure your hostname is correct, if in doubt, request the details of your Jackdaw registration from the IT team. If you know your IP Address, this will also work. Add your credentials (CRSid and password)
You can now connect to your Windows machine
